More than the First Black President: Barack Obama

I can easily say that I have been and still am a cynic. Today, however, I am hopeful for the United States and the world at large. This is a historical time, the election of Barack Obama is a matter more important than the statistics of colour.

Why do I believe this election is more? Click through to see.

  1. Inspiration to African-Americans - Not just Americans, but Black people all over the world. Arguably, no race in North America needs more inspiration than Black people. There is no way any economic or social problems can be fixed overnight, but everything great starts from our minds.
  2. Reflects changing thought of this generation - There is a quote that says “a nation’s thoughts don’t change, it’s just that the people who held them die”. I know, cynical. Today, I am a little more hopeful that Americans are changing in their thoughts. Of course on the extremes not much movement, but even a little change in the middle means a lot.
  3. Hope for Americans - In tumultuous times, people need someone or something to look up to. The idea of hope and a President to bring it sound like pretty damn good to me. America needs someone with a good head on their shoulders, and they need him today.
  4. Hope for the world - I can’t speak with statistics, but I know the entire world is abuzz with excitement at the thought of what change Obama may bring: The Middle East, North Korea, environmental policy, scientific policy, and so much more.

How is this relevant to becoming more cultured? In 50 years, written in world history books, the first sentence describing Barack Obama may be that he was the first African-American president. The next fifty will be about how he changed America and the World.

Exactly right. Even if one thought McCain would be a better president or had a better economic strategy or something like that, The United States absolutely needed Barack Obama to win. It would have been too deflating otherwise for all the people who now had hope, Obama energized a population and put faith in Americans who did not have that faith before. A united United States has a much better chance of succeeding then one where only a specific demographic was heard.

That being said, I don’t expect the whole world to reap many major rewards for this. They’re still going to have to fix their quagmire in Iraq and hopefully the US can avoid inciting the hatred of more people with this political shift they’re making today.
